Nice info. I have placed ads inside the text as in the case of lay out 2. But the orientation is towards right.
So I think i should change the adsense part to the left side of the content.

I'm also trying to figure out the best ad placement for my new site.
Good luck finding the right balance. By the way, your current google ad box near the top does not seem to be display correctly in Safari (4.0.4) for Mac. It looks like it is being pushed to the right out of your main content layout.

The current layout seems to be working much better folks!
Is this layout user/visitor friendly? Are you guys happy with the ads being where they are currently?

In layout 2 the ads are wrapped around the content, which may take focus away from them, since your readers might be more interesting in your content, so they does not look at the ads.

Yeah, that is a tough one. I have just started experimenting with adsense placement. The previous layout I had did not produce anything. I am scouting for ideas

What you say (third idea) does look soooo much true when read first.

But, google's conditions mention that it only shows ads depending on who bids higher and for what place. With adwords, you can chose which place in the page you are bidding for and which position too. The more you bid, the better place you get. Obviously most highly 'bid for space' would be the one that is nearest to the content. So, it might be a mistake to think google shows better performing ads near the content.

Also thinking logically, isn't that unfair if google really decides to do something like that?!!!
Lets say Ad A has been in the market and is performing at about 80percentile. And then someone starts a new campaign Ad B which is not a high bid and hence will obviously perform less, because of the less number of times and the least known places it is shown.
Now if google decides to implement that third idea, then, there will be never that Ad B will pick up and perform better, because this strategy, just improves the perfomance of Ad A and always kills Ad B and hence not allowing Company B to flourish. That would be ...hmmm... unfair (like making rich, richer and poor poorer)

Yeah it can be tough to find the right balance so as to make money but not scare off potential readers with too many ads.

I am no adsense expert, but general trend seems to be that users tend to avoid adverts. In your case #2 they do "get it" that the very top part of the site is advertising, and they automatically ignore that part of your site even if there would appear some interesting ads/links. In your case #1 ads and content are mixed nicely so some people think the link in add is part of your content. Some may click on it by accident.

Third idea I have - may be google, when deciding what add to display, also considers how "close" the content is to the advert? If add is near content - better performing ads are shown, but if ad is far away from content (Case #2, in header) - less performing, smaller PPC ads are shown? Could this be?
